Week 2 Football Predictions, 9/11/2010

For those who are interested - here's my selection of picks for tomorrow's Division I FCS games being played. Last week's picks - Patriot League and Top 25 included - I started out a gaudy 8-0 but was a much more humbling 19-9 the rest of the way, starting me off at 26-9 or 74% on the year.

I missed the biggest upset of the day (Jacksonville State over FBS Ole Miss), just missed picking what would have been the second biggest (Chattanooga over Appalachian State) and made some completely boneheaded picks (UC Davis over Cal?  Labmuth over Alcorn State?) making it an awfully bittersweet week despite the record.  I did predict Southern Utah would make it within ten points of FBS Wyoming (the actual deficit was eight) and picking Tennessee State over Alabama A&M and Southern over Delaware State were the highlights of the rest of the weekend.

I've got a game to go to (guess which one?), but below the flip are my picks.  Just the picks today.  (more)

Sports Network Top 25

Cal Poly 31, No. 1 Montana 28.  Western State (D-II) won't prepare them for the Mustangs, jacked that they're going to be Big Sky bound next year.

No. 3 Appalachian State 55, Jacksonville 7.  The Dolphins have a kicker - unlike the Mocs last week - but the Mountaineers won't need to rely on that to win this time out.

No. 4 Southern Illinois 37,  Illinois (FBS) 24.  Illinois is terrible, and the Salukis are pretty solid the week after seismic FBS upsets (see: 2008).

Chattanooga 34 No. 5. Jacksonville State 28.  Big letdown for the Gamecocks after the huge upset, and the Mocs find their kicker, backup WR Jeff Veres.

Pitt 52, No. 6 New Hampshire 21.  New Hampshire is known for their upset-ability - but Pitt is entirely aware of this.  Their loss last weekend will not help the Wildcats one bit.

No. 8 Elon 54, Shaw (D-II) 3.  QB Scott Riddle gets a bye week after giving FBS Duke a run for its money last weekend.

No. 9 South Dakota State 28, No. 16 Delaware 24.  West Chester will not have prepared the Hens well for the Jackrabbits, who are itching to get that Grizzly monkey off their backs.

No. 10 Stephen F Austin 35, Albany 13.  While Albany's 3-0 win over Maine was impressive, it should be sobering for them to face an actual offense this week.

No. 11. William & Mary 56, VMI 0.  The wrong place at the wrong time for the Keydets.

Virginia Tech 28, No. 12 James Madison 21.  Virginia Tech cannot and will not lose this game.  Desperate Hokies are not good news for the Dukes.

Missouri (FBS) 38, No. 13 McNeese State 17.  And the Tigers are just pissed they're not in the Big Ten.

No. 15. South Carolina State 55, Mississippi Valley State 3.  Jerry Rice's alma mater could be the worst team in football, and the Bulldogs should demonstrate that this weekend.

No 17. Eastern Washington 44, Central Washington (D-II) 14.  Cupcake city at Qwest Field.

No. 19 Liberty 29, Ball State (FBS) 24.  The Flames have come oh-so-close to pulling off the FBS upset so many times, and this - with QB Mike Brown - is the year the pull it off.

No. 20 Weber State 31, Northern Colorado 10.  The Bears are getting better, but they're still a long way from the Grillmasters.

No. 14 Northern Iowa 47, No. 21 North Dakota State 3.  Bison, meet your daddies.  Beating a horrible Kansas (FBS) team was one thing; beating the Panthers in the season opener in the UNI Dome is quite another.

Southern Miss (FBS) 28, No. 22 Prairie View A&M 20.  The Panthers have the horses to compete, but I think the Golden Eagles will find a way to squeeze this one out - late.

Central Arkansas 25, No. 23 Eastern Illinois 24.  Watch out for these Bears.  This could be a great game.

Washington State (FBS) 30, No. 24 Montana State 27.  I think this is another FBS game that goes down to the wire - with Rob Ash's squad falling just short at the end.

Bonus Picks
Jackson State 27, Tennessee State 23
Alabama A&M 29, Central State (D-II) 20
Florida A&M 35, Delaware State 21
Navy (FBS) 41, Georgia Southern 9
Southeastern Louisiana 41, UT-Martin 10
Wofford 28, Charleston Southern 14
Youngstown State 19, Butler 15

Bottom line, the team that beat Nova during the Lembo era shows the type of player recruited. Don't tell me that Lehigh has fallen off that far because that's bull. Everyone started apologizing before the coin went up...crap!

Coen one year into his miserable career with Lembo's team we beat Villanova. Since then it's been excuse after excuse for everything on South mountain.

Patriot League is looking really bad this season.. Lehigh crushed today... Colgate crushed at Furman... But there's little Jacksonville giving App State all it can handle.. The play in same league as Drake but look like they could whip any Patriot League team these days... They beat Old Dominion ( full scholarship) last week.. Will any Patriot team be able to compete outside the league against scholarship teams this season????

The mass exodus of people out of Goodman Stadium at halftime should be a kick in the backside to Lehigh's AD if he's paying any attention at all. That was simply putrid.

Lehigh again lacks speed at skill positions. Villanova had everyone in the box which you see mostly in HS. Lehigh manhandled both sides of the ball. Got the big, physical line but only 29 yards rushing & no 1st downs. Attendance 8100, sad, Lehigh used to average 10,000 plus. A bright note, the punter was very good foe Lehigh

Today's results show how far all PL teams have fallen behind in the past 5 years to the scholarship conferences. Attendance was embarrassing. Are sports becoming irrelevant at Lehigh? As we have become an 'elite' national university, with more international students, higher academic standards, etc., I dare say there has been a cultural shift. Probably as many students in the libraries this afternoon as Goodman. That game, 10 years ago would have had an SRO crowd. "The times they are a-changin'", and the PL Presidents have decide this December what they really want to do. But there is litte reason to posture about having a goal to win an FCS national championship until the philosophy changes.

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. UMass 21, Lafayette 14, halftime

Are you watching this game? UMass had this game under control until about 3 minutes in the second quarter, and then got an interception, converted for a TD. Then the Leopards forced a fumble off the return, and then converted THAT for a TD, making this a game. It's on CN8. You really should be watching this.

Examining A Figure Skating Rivalry: Tonya and Nancy

It must be very hard for a millennial to understand the fuss around the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding figure skating scandal in the run-up to the 1994 Olympics. If you're of a certain age, though - whether you're a figure skating fan or not, and I am decidedly no fan of figure skating - the Shakespearean story of Harding and Kerrigan still engages, and still grabs peoples' attention, twenty years later. Why, though?  Why, twenty years later, in a sport I care little, does the story still grab me?  Why did I spend time out of my life watching dueling NBC and ESPN documentaries on the subject, and Google multiple stories about Jeff Gilooly , idiot "bodyguards", and the whole sordid affair? I think it's because the story, even twenty years later, is like opium. The addictive story, even now, has everything.  Everything.  The woman that fought for everything, perhaps crossing over to the dark side to get her chance at Olypic Gold, vs. the woman who
