Media Day Tomorrow; LB Pierce Questionable for Opener?

Lehigh's summer practice is coming to a close this weekend, as the Mountain Hawks finish with a full scrimmage at Murray Goodman stadium tomorrow which coincides with Lehigh's hosted "Media Day". The latest report from the Lehigh website gives the scoop:

After practice Coen offered his thoughts on several Mountain Hawks that have left an impression during the 2009 camp. He started by pointing out a pair of players from the freshmen class, one from each side of the ball. “Freshman TE Jamel Haggins without a doubt on offense has been impressive,” Coen commented. “He’s big and physical, he’s catching everything thrown at him; he’s done a great job at tight end for us.” Coen continued, “On defense freshman CB Bryan Andrews continues to do a nice job. He’s a very good athlete with solid ball skills; he had a nice interception and runback the other day during our scrimmage. He’s still learning the position but he’s making a serious push for playing time.”

Asked to single out a pair of upperclassmen who are making their case for increased playing time Coen was quick to note that junior RB Jay Campbell and senior DL Steven Brown have stood out. “Jay Campbell has done a nice job going all the way back to the spring really,” Coen said. “He’s a little bigger than last year, a little more physical and he’s been consistent throughout camp.” He went onto add, “Like Jay, Steven Brown also had a solid spring. It’s great to see him stepping up as a senior and now that we’ve found the right position for him, he looks right at home.”

These reports always seem pretty rosy, but I am detecting a real spring in coach Coen's step with the emergence of all these players. You can never have too many running backs, and with Campbell and junior RB Jaren Walker in the backfield both apparently doing very well, hopefully what might have seemed like a potential weakness going into the fall may very well end up being a strength if Campbell indeed has emerged.

Haggins' emergence at TE is pretty exciting as well. It sounds from the release that he's at least the #2 TE behind junior TE Alex Wojdowski, a pretty darned good red-zone pass catcher in his own right. Also worthy of mention is sophomore FB Bryce Arruda, who got some action this week with a touchdown grab. Could we see more action towards the "H" backs during the regular season? If Arruda, Wojdowski or Haggins emerge as pass catching threats, that could be great news for the Lehigh offense.

Likewise, Steven Brown gives us enviable depth on the "D" line going into the year. While traditionally in the 3-4 the linebackers are the ones that are the focus, our starting "D" line (senior DE B.J. Benning, senior DE David Brown, and junior DT Phil Winett) could see Steven Brown switched in as well.

The only down news is that senior LB Al Pierce, one of the unsung heroes of last year's win over "that school in Easton", is nursing a hamstring injury that doesn't sound too good:

Pierce tweaked his hamstring about a week ago in practice and remains out during the football team's final few days of training camp. The Mountain Hawks scrimmage on Saturday before hosting their annual media day at 1 p.m. at Goodman Stadium.

"He's kind of week-to-week," coach Andy Coen said. "He's doing everything he can. I don't think it's like what we dealt with (Matt) McGowan a few years ago, but he (Pierce) pulled it pretty good."

The good news is that senior LB Troy Taylor should be able to step right into Al Pierce's spot if he happens to be out for any extended period. Taylor really was a great special teams hawk last year, and he has always had starting talent.

Finally, Andrews' emergence in the defensive backfield also gives Lehigh great depth in a position where you can never have enough speed and depth. Is all this pointing to a special Lehigh season?

Hoping to be at Lehigh media day tomorrow. In any event I'll file a report on the proceedings.

I Pierce pulled his hamstring "prett good" as you quote HC Coen, then I would be surprised to see him before October. 'Hammys' are really tough, and Pierce's game is speed. Without a good leg he becomes a liability to himself and the team. Maybe he can redshirt and come back next year, when we'll need some experience, as we already have a lot of seniors at LB.

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. Made-Up Midseason Grades for Lehigh Football

We are now officially midway through the 2023 Lehigh football season.  The Mountain Hawks sit at 1-5 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League. I thought I'd go ahead and make up some midseason grades, and set some "fan goals" for the second half. The 2023 Mountain Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the seven team Patriot League.  In order to meet or exceed that expectation, they'll probably have to go at least 3-2 the rest of the way in conference play.  Their remaining games are vs. Georgetown, at Bucknell, vs. Holy Cross, at Colgate, and vs. Lafayette in The Rivalry. Can they do it? Culture Changing: B+ .  I was there in the Bronx last week after the tough 38-35 defeat to Fordham, and there wasn't a single player emerging from the locker room that looked like they didn't care.  Every face was glum.  They didn't even seem sad.  More frustrated and angry. That may seem normal, considering the agonizing way the Mountain Hawks lost, but it was a marked chan

Fifteen Guys Who Might be Lehigh's Next Football Coach (and Five More)

If you've been following my Twitter account, you might have caught some "possibilities" as Lehigh's next head football coach like Lou Holtz, Brett Favre and Bo Pelini .  The chance that any of those three guys actually are offered and accept the Lehigh head coaching position are somewhere between zero and zero.  (The full list of my Twitter "possibilities" are all on this thread on the Lehigh Sports Forum .) However the actual Lehigh head football coaching search is well underway, with real names and real possibilities. I've come up with a list of fifteen possible names, some which I've heard whispered as candidates, others which might be good fits at Lehigh for a variety of reasons. UPDATE: I have found five more names of possible head coaches that I am adding to this list below. Who are the twenty people?  Here they are, in alphabetical order.
