LFN's Preseason Patriot League Team, 2010

Remember when there weren't any preseason teams for the Patriot League, and there was a dearth of coverage of I-AA and FCS football?

It seems hard to fathom now, with the Sports Network issuing a flurry of different columns on everything from the top FCS players at all positions (of which senior OL Will Rackley is listed) to a piece on the best matchups during the 2010 season (in which "The Rivalry" features, and a reminder that Lehigh won last year 27-21 in overtime).  Add to that Phil Steele's 2010 All-Patriot League team, and you have plenty to chew on before the start of the football season.

Last year, I published my own All-Patriot League team for the first time - as I saw that the Patriot League themselves did not issue one. I decided to make it a yearly thing - so, below the flip, please enjoy my picks for the preseason all-Patriot League team, first and second team. (more)

Hard to believe Bucknell's Josh Eden doesn't deserve a spot. He made 1st team All-PL as a soph before leaving for a Mormon mission. He's back and is bigger and stronger.

No question Eden had a very good sophomore year, but he's since been out of action for two years. He may come back with a heck of a year, but then, again. Similar to anticipating Lehigh's Phil Winett who got rave reviews as a freshman on the DL, but then has suffered two back to back season ending injuries before the season every got started. Will he be the 'monster' many were projecting three years ago? Only time will tell. Great article to get the juices flowing.

Dornfried as 1st team? Did he even have a field goal attempt over 40 yards? I know he didn't make one over 39 yards, can't say I think he is very deserving. Rodriguez was an All American honorable mention as a sophmore, I think he comes back strong after a down year with a new snapper and holder. Not to mention he had a few long attempts that he missed and he still had more field goals and points then Dornfried last season.

Agreed on Kennedy...LFN trying to avoid being accused of "homerism" (as opposed to Iliadism) by the Leopard contingent on AGS.(;-)

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. UMass 21, Lafayette 14, halftime

Are you watching this game? UMass had this game under control until about 3 minutes in the second quarter, and then got an interception, converted for a TD. Then the Leopards forced a fumble off the return, and then converted THAT for a TD, making this a game. It's on CN8. You really should be watching this.

Examining A Figure Skating Rivalry: Tonya and Nancy

It must be very hard for a millennial to understand the fuss around the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding figure skating scandal in the run-up to the 1994 Olympics. If you're of a certain age, though - whether you're a figure skating fan or not, and I am decidedly no fan of figure skating - the Shakespearean story of Harding and Kerrigan still engages, and still grabs peoples' attention, twenty years later. Why, though?  Why, twenty years later, in a sport I care little, does the story still grab me?  Why did I spend time out of my life watching dueling NBC and ESPN documentaries on the subject, and Google multiple stories about Jeff Gilooly , idiot "bodyguards", and the whole sordid affair? I think it's because the story, even twenty years later, is like opium.
