2008 Hawks of the Year Award

This weekend, Lehigh will be holding its football awards banquet to honor the 2008 team that had a hard-fought rollercoaster year - but with a season-ending streak of winning three of four games - including the win over "that school in Easton" that you can buy directly from Lehighsports.com - it will be a much more upbeat ceremony, no doubt, than it has in years past.

To celebrate the 2008 season, I'm releasing the "Hawks of the Year" awards that I've been doing since 2003. Based on the weekly polls during the season and my nominations for "Players of the Week", it's my own yearly tradition to celebrate the achievements of this year's Mountain Hawks.

Without any further ado, let's get right to the nominations.

Offensive Hawks of the Year
With the resurgence of the Lehigh offense, it wasn't easy to figure out who the winners would be; and as it turned out, for the second straight year it was a tie between senior RB Matt McGowan and senior WR Sekou "Stuntman" Yansane.

McGowan rushed 175 times for 805 yards, caught 26 balls for 291 yards - and for good measure, threw a key 34 yard pass on fourth down in the win against Fordham - taking every fan in the stadium by surprise. The Hazelton Area alumnus got 5 touchdowns on the year - with two memorable ones against Holy Cross, one on a 66 yard screen pass and a 46 yard touchdown run. McGowan also ended the year on the Patriot League Academic honor roll.

The "Stunt Man" caught 48 passes for 724 yards to lead the Mountain Hawks, as well as scoring 4 touchdowns. Called "Stunt Man" for his acrobatic catches falling out-of-bounds, he'll be best remembered for making ESPN's "Play of the Day" for (what else?) an acrobatic catch to set up a Lehigh touchdown in the 144th meeting of "The Rivalry". Yansane also ended the year on the Patriot League Academic honor roll as well.

Defensive Hawk of the Year
Once again, it's a tie between two Mountain Hawk linebackers: senior LB Tim Diamond and junior LB Matt Cohen. Diamond was always around the ball, racking up 104 tackles on the year (including 6 1/2 for loss) and becoming the first Mountain Hawk to register 100 tackles in back-to-back seasons since Ian Eason ('98) pulled that trick in 1996 and 1997. Cohen at times kept a low profile in Lehigh's defense, but it seemed like whenever Lehigh needed a big tackle for loss Cohen was there to make the play he ended the year with 53 tackles and an amazing 17 tackles for loss on the year.

Both Diamond and Cohen were on the first team all-Patriot League team as well.

Special Teams Hawk of the Year
He did a lot more than just return the final interception to put the icing in the win in the 144th meeting of "The Rivalry", but sophomore DB John Kennedy didn't just do that. He also racked up 666 yards in kickoff returns and countless times put the Lehigh offense in good field position. On defense, he notched 65 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 3 pass break-ups to earn him the nod at special teams.

Hawk Of The Year
This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise: the 2008 Hawk of the year is sophomore QB J.B. Clark. Going into 2008, the biggest question was who would win the QB battle, and would the winner be up to the job as a Division I quarterback. After a tough start against eventual FCS playoff participant Villanova, Clark found his shoes against Fordham and continued to get better and better week after week - ending with his finest performance of the year against "that school in Easton".

The numbers say a lot. A 132.93 passer rating. 2,350 yards passing. 23 touchdowns passing and 3 touchdowns rushing. But it's really about how he led this offense from being a huge question mark to a force to be reckoned with - and which culumulated with his clutching of the Lehigh/Lafayette MVP trophy.

Add another honor to your trophy case, J.B. Congratulations on becoming the 2008 Hawk of the Year.

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. Made-Up Midseason Grades for Lehigh Football

We are now officially midway through the 2023 Lehigh football season.  The Mountain Hawks sit at 1-5 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League. I thought I'd go ahead and make up some midseason grades, and set some "fan goals" for the second half. The 2023 Mountain Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the seven team Patriot League.  In order to meet or exceed that expectation, they'll probably have to go at least 3-2 the rest of the way in conference play.  Their remaining games are vs. Georgetown, at Bucknell, vs. Holy Cross, at Colgate, and vs. Lafayette in The Rivalry. Can they do it? Culture Changing: B+ .  I was there in the Bronx last week after the tough 38-35 defeat to Fordham, and there wasn't a single player emerging from the locker room that looked like they didn't care.  Every face was glum.  They didn't even seem sad.  More frustrated and angry. That may seem normal, considering the agonizing way the Mountain Hawks lost, but it was a marked chan

Fifteen Guys Who Might be Lehigh's Next Football Coach (and Five More)

If you've been following my Twitter account, you might have caught some "possibilities" as Lehigh's next head football coach like Lou Holtz, Brett Favre and Bo Pelini .  The chance that any of those three guys actually are offered and accept the Lehigh head coaching position are somewhere between zero and zero.  (The full list of my Twitter "possibilities" are all on this thread on the Lehigh Sports Forum .) However the actual Lehigh head football coaching search is well underway, with real names and real possibilities. I've come up with a list of fifteen possible names, some which I've heard whispered as candidates, others which might be good fits at Lehigh for a variety of reasons. UPDATE: I have found five more names of possible head coaches that I am adding to this list below. Who are the twenty people?  Here they are, in alphabetical order.
