BREAKING: Coach Coen Will Return in 2009

As reported from the blog of Keith Groller of the Morning Call:

I talked to a bunch of people at today's Lehigh football luncheon and learned a lot of things.

But the most important thing to be learned was when I headed for the door at the Cooperhead Grille and Mike Stagnitta, Lehigh's football contact for the school's sports media relations office, stopped me on the side and assured me that Andy Coen would be back as head coach in 2009.

Mike was speaking on behalf of the athletic department, I am sure. Mike doesn't make those decisions, nor does he speak out of turn. He was told what to say after I speculated about Andy's future in a story earlier this week.

As I mentioned elsewhere, one huge subplot from Saturday's game has been taken away. Coach Coen, according to the highest levels of the Lehigh athletic department, assured Keith that Coen will be back in 2009.

My take? I'm happy that coach Coen - barring a complete disaster this weekend - will be around next year to reap the fruits of a team that completely has his stamp on it.

But that should not diminish from the importance of this game this weekend.

Beating Lafayette would not only be the perfect sendoff for this senior class. It would give Lehigh a two-game winning streak into the long offseason. It would definitely give Lehigh some votes in the season-ending Sports Network Top 25 poll. And while it's an old chestnut, Lehigh would have serious positive momentum going into next year's spring practice and beyond.

Coach Coen for sure won't want to go into the Spring wondering how to beat Lafayette for the first time.

Thanks for the early heads-up. I know not to renew my season tickets next year.

This is only delaying the inevitable, and the timing before the Easton game is troublesome. If we lose, all hell will break loose on that decision.

Oh well, we may as well get used to things like 4659 for next year. A darn shame because Coach has LU in his blood and has a passion for the game.

Oh and Chuck, I'll bet you a microbrew of your choosing if LU gets any votes for a win this weekend.

Coach Coen is a great coach. If you give him the time and shut your pie holes he will prove himself. Glad you are cancelling your season tickets NO FAN! Haha!

Where are you seats? I hope they are better than mine, so when you don't renew, I'll be able to move up a few rows!

Fair weather fans s**k almost as much as Laf-at-it.

A one year deal? Only coach I know to win a overtime coin toss and choose to go on O first(Yale 2006).
Also was surprised by Colgate going for 2 with a 1 point lead late in this year's game and wasted a timeout. The kids may like him but he has a lot to learn with the game day stuff.

wow dumb and dumbest, what the hell are you talking about? Your post makes no sense at all. Please enlighten me. Only coach you know that tries to score first? Hmm I know a few.....hundred. Also your surprise at Colgate going for two late in the game with a one point lead? Hmmm lets see they take the kick they lead by two. They make the two they lead by three. What did I miss? You of all people should not criticize the coach

Engineer 92, you probably couldn't afford my seats. I actually forked out the extra few bucks for the seatbacks. If your manager at Mickey Dees promotes you up from the fry station maybe you could swing that extra $5 for seats with the grown-ups. Sounds like a real fan like you hasn't attended a Lehigh game this year because there's a $hitload of vacant 50 yard line seats at every game.

Now Anonymous, you show your true caliber with a post like that. Lack of class. Glad we won't have to hear from someone like you at games next year.

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. Made-Up Midseason Grades for Lehigh Football

We are now officially midway through the 2023 Lehigh football season.  The Mountain Hawks sit at 1-5 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League. I thought I'd go ahead and make up some midseason grades, and set some "fan goals" for the second half. The 2023 Mountain Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the seven team Patriot League.  In order to meet or exceed that expectation, they'll probably have to go at least 3-2 the rest of the way in conference play.  Their remaining games are vs. Georgetown, at Bucknell, vs. Holy Cross, at Colgate, and vs. Lafayette in The Rivalry. Can they do it? Culture Changing: B+ .  I was there in the Bronx last week after the tough 38-35 defeat to Fordham, and there wasn't a single player emerging from the locker room that looked like they didn't care.  Every face was glum.  They didn't even seem sad.  More frustrated and angry. That may seem normal, considering the agonizing way the Mountain Hawks lost, but it was a marked chan

Fifteen Guys Who Might be Lehigh's Next Football Coach (and Five More)

If you've been following my Twitter account, you might have caught some "possibilities" as Lehigh's next head football coach like Lou Holtz, Brett Favre and Bo Pelini .  The chance that any of those three guys actually are offered and accept the Lehigh head coaching position are somewhere between zero and zero.  (The full list of my Twitter "possibilities" are all on this thread on the Lehigh Sports Forum .) However the actual Lehigh head football coaching search is well underway, with real names and real possibilities. I've come up with a list of fifteen possible names, some which I've heard whispered as candidates, others which might be good fits at Lehigh for a variety of reasons. UPDATE: I have found five more names of possible head coaches that I am adding to this list below. Who are the twenty people?  Here they are, in alphabetical order.
