Lehigh Practice Featured Again in Morning Call

Quick hit: coach Coen was interviewed in today's Morning Call about spring practice. Here's some of the highlights:

“We’ve gone away from any kind of option stuff that we did a lot with Sedale,” Coen said. “We’re concentrating on these guys being more dropback-style quarterbacks.”

Coen said the three-way battle for QB will not be decided during spring sessions.

“I don’t want to make a rash decision,” he said.

Coen wants the competition to continue into August, although he doesn’t necessarily want it to come down to the final week before the Sept. 6 opener against Drake.

“Bokosky has got a better grasp of the offense because he’s been here longer, but each day someone does something different,” Coen said. “The decision could possibly come down to our last intrasquad scrimmage [in August], but I hope I can say ‘here’s our guy’ before that.

“This is a new situation for me. It hasn’t happened in my time here and it didn’t happen at Penn when I was an offensive coordinator except for one year, and even then things sorted themselves out fast.”

Clearly the buzz is still focused on the QB battle this spring - with no frontrunner at this point.

After Keith Groller does an article on Lehigh football, sometimes he follows up with a blog posting. And today, Keith did not disappoint:

Things seem positive over on South Mountain. I think Coen knows that this year -- year No. 3 -- it will be more his style of football team and his players, and he's confident that a turnaround is going to happen. He would never say this, but I don't think Sedale Threatt and his offensive philosophy were ever a good fit. Threatt was athletic and dynamic, but lacked consistency and accuracy. Coen would prefer a strong-armed, stay-in-the-pocket passer for his offense.

The question is: Who's going to get that quarterback job? I agree with those who say that if you have two quarterbacks, you really have none. One of the three -- Chris Bokosky, J.B.Clark or Trace Cisneros -- has got to separate himself and become a clearcut choice for 2008 to be a good year. And, the earlier the better.

I also have my doubts about the defense, which has struggled for several seasons to make a big stop when it was most needed. But Coen said the team is getting bigger and stronger, which is key, because too many times lately, the Mountain Hawks have been pushed around when it mattered the most. At 2-4 in the league last season, Lehigh has a lot of catching up to do before it can be considered a playoff and championship-contender again.

Tough words, but very true. At 2-4 in the league last year and losing so many to "that school in Easton" in a row it's worth repeating that Lehigh has a long way to go to get back to expectations of playoffs and titles every year.

I question how Coen is handling this entire QB situation.

You cant tell me that the coaching staff doesn't have a front runner at this position.

Procrastinating on this decsion can only cause internal issues, not give the team a leader to look to, and not let the recievers and QB gel.

I think he is loosing ground the entire spring session with his inability to make the call.

Cant be good for the team.

Scrap the 3-4. It won't work at this level of football. Not unless you have truly exceptional LBs. And considering how miserable the pass rush has been for the past two years I'd have thought AC would consider building a strong D-line the #1 priority.

Prediction: Another 5-6 mediocre season.

Competition is what makes players better. Until he and we see the QB's in game conditions will anyone have an idea who is going to under center come September.

yea, then you all can bitch and complain about his choice. Get a life...

I didn't realize you are part of the coaching staff "ngineer" "not until he and WE" since when do the blogers on this board get a say in who's at any position!

Who said anything about having a "say" in making a decision. I said until ANYONE gets to see the competitors in game conditions will we have an "idea" as to who might be playing.
Tough day with the boss man dumping on you at the office? Kick the dog too?

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. Made-Up Midseason Grades for Lehigh Football

We are now officially midway through the 2023 Lehigh football season.  The Mountain Hawks sit at 1-5 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League. I thought I'd go ahead and make up some midseason grades, and set some "fan goals" for the second half. The 2023 Mountain Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the seven team Patriot League.  In order to meet or exceed that expectation, they'll probably have to go at least 3-2 the rest of the way in conference play.  Their remaining games are vs. Georgetown, at Bucknell, vs. Holy Cross, at Colgate, and vs. Lafayette in The Rivalry. Can they do it? Culture Changing: B+ .  I was there in the Bronx last week after the tough 38-35 defeat to Fordham, and there wasn't a single player emerging from the locker room that looked like they didn't care.  Every face was glum.  They didn't even seem sad.  More frustrated and angry. That may seem normal, considering the agonizing way the Mountain Hawks lost, but it was a marked chan

Fifteen Guys Who Might be Lehigh's Next Football Coach (and Five More)

If you've been following my Twitter account, you might have caught some "possibilities" as Lehigh's next head football coach like Lou Holtz, Brett Favre and Bo Pelini .  The chance that any of those three guys actually are offered and accept the Lehigh head coaching position are somewhere between zero and zero.  (The full list of my Twitter "possibilities" are all on this thread on the Lehigh Sports Forum .) However the actual Lehigh head football coaching search is well underway, with real names and real possibilities. I've come up with a list of fifteen possible names, some which I've heard whispered as candidates, others which might be good fits at Lehigh for a variety of reasons. UPDATE: I have found five more names of possible head coaches that I am adding to this list below. Who are the twenty people?  Here they are, in alphabetical order.
