Lehigh's Class of 2012 (as far as I know)

My last post had a sample photo of a "signing day" ceremony - well, to my left is a real one: welcome, Bryce Martin, to the Lehigh football family!

OT/DE Andrew Knapp (Aurora HS, OH). The link mentions that "Moved from tight end to OT last fall and emerged as team's top offensive lineman." Another link points out that he looks like he might be lining up on the defensive side of the ball.

WR Jake Drwal (Millard West HS, NE). Our first Nebraska recruit that I can recall: and a first-team all-Omaha metro wideout. Remember Buddy Ryan, who once said that Cris Carter "just catches touchdowns?" Well Drwal was all-State is described as a guy who "just makes plays". (Check out this last link and the video clips... you'll be glad you did.)

WR/DB Kenyatta Drake (Hammond HS, MD). Click the link, where he's described as an "electric player" and a "vocal leader" by his coach.

Last week I overheard one of the coaches say they had 17 so far. None yet from the Lehigh Valley this year which is interesting.

The articles on Lum are interesting and seem to indicate that this kid could be like Jaren Walker, who suffered a senior injury causing bigger schools to back off. Great potential.

Just as much as the Lehigh Valley recruits, I like to see LU bringing in players from Bucks County schools. Good to see them taking an interest in Pennridge and CB West this year. Those schools are as close to Bethlehem as some "Lehigh Valley" schools, and they produce some great players.

Central Bucks West running back/linebacker Matt Fitz signed with Lehigh, which had been pursuing him along with Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie-Mellon and Dayton.

Fitz was a third-team All-Suburban One League Continental Conference choice as a running back and a second-team All-Intell pick as a linebacker. He will get the chance to play running back, but might eventually get moved to safety, where he often played at West.

Fitz (6-0, 200 pounds) had narrowed his choices down to Dayton and Lehigh before deciding on Lehigh late last week.

�It was a little closer to home,� said Fitz, who plans to study engineering. �And Lehigh has academic prestige. I felt like it had everything I wanted.�

Pennridge wide receiver Jimmy Jefferson also picked Lehigh, a decision he reached after an official visit over the weekend.

The 6-4, 200-pound Jefferson was down to Wagner, Hofstra and Lehigh, but then Penn State wide receivers coach Mike McQueary offered him the chance to be a preferred walk-on in recent weeks.

Jefferson said thanks, but no thanks.

�What myself and my parents talked about was going to a place where you know you're wanted,� said Jefferson, a first-team All-SOL National and first-team All-Intell pick. �They also have great academics there, which is very strong for me.�

No players from the Lehigh Valley ?
This is why Lehigh is Lehigh.
The Lehigh Valley is a football hotbed and noone is good enough for Lehigh.
Lehigh needs Lehigh Valley Football players, AND MOSTLY A LEHIGH VALLEY COACH ! The Valley is rich in football tradition, Lehigh IS NOT !
Look at Lehigh's staff, get me a tough nosed Valley coach, not Ivy League Wussies.

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League....

Examining A Figure Skating Rivalry: Tonya and Nancy

It must be very hard for a millennial to understand the fuss around the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding figure skating scandal in the run-up to the 1994 Olympics. If you're of a certain age, though - whether you're a figure skating fan or not, and I am decidedly no fan of figure skating - the Shakespearean story of Harding and Kerrigan still engages, and still grabs peoples' attention, twenty years later. Why, though?  Why, twenty years later, in a sport I care little, does the story still grab me?  Why did I spend time out of my life watching dueling NBC and ESPN documentaries on the subject, and Google multiple stories about Jeff Gilooly , idiot "bodyguards", and the whole sordid affair? I think it's because the story, even twenty years later, is like opium. #TheRivalry Flashback: November 21st, 1987: Lehigh 17, Lafayette 10

Since becoming an undergrad at Lehigh back in the late 1980s, I first heard about the historic nature of the football team and "The Rivalry" through the stories that fellow students would share. I did not attend the final meeting between Lehigh and Lafayette at Taylor Stadium, which was the final time a football game would be played there. Those that did attend said that was that it was cold. "I remember it being one of the coldest games ever," Mark Redmann recollected, "with strong Northwesterly winds and the temperature hovering around 20.  By the end of the game, the stands were half empty because most of the fans just couldn't take the cold. "Fortunately, several of my fraternity brothers snuck in flasks to help fend off the chill."
