BREAKING: Jordan Scott Suspended

(Photo Credit: Jim Commentucci / The Post-Standard)

I had planned to blog something about financial aid this week, but that will wait: Colgate's star junior RB Jordan Scott has been suspended from the team after being charged with burglary:

The football future of star Colgate running back Jordan Scott is in flux after his arrest on a burglary charge. According to the Hamilton village police department, Scott and wide receiver David Morgan were charged Sunday with second-degree burglary, a felony, in connection with an incident on campus Saturday night. The players were arraigned Monday in Hamilton village court and released on $10,000 bond.

It's an embarrassment to Scott and the Colgate athletic department - however, a source tells me that there may be less to this than meets the eye, calling the incident "minor". No decisions have been made on this yet by Colgate head football coach Dick Biddle or the Colgate athletic department, except the fact that Scott and Morgan were suspended from the team, pending a review from the Student Conduct Board, the athletic department, and Biddle himself.

If the incident is indeed "minor" as was relayed to me, one would hope that Scott would be able to pass through the boards and be allowed to play again next year. Coach Biddle, of course, will have the final say on that.

You never wish something like this on any school and especially to Scott, whom I met last year at Patriot League Media Day. Everyone should hope that this is indeed a minor incident and that Scott will be playing next year for the Raiders.

UPDATE: The actual crime the pair are charged with is breaking into a dorm room on Saturday, which is considered "larceny" according to another source. The response from campus security seems to indicate that it was certainly treated with utmost seriousness. This is still a developing story, so look here for future developments.

UPDATE 2: More has been added as this became an AP story:

Scott and wide receiver David Morgan were charged Sunday with second-degree burglary and pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Monday. The 20-year-old juniors were released after posting bail and the case was adjourned until Jan. 7.

Two female residents on Saturday heard the intruders, who ran out when confronted, according to a police report. Hamilton Police Chief James Tilbe said the students identified Scott and Morgan through photos on a university Web site.

"At this point, we can't find anything they took," Tilbe said. "According to what they said, they were trying doors, found it open, and just started to go through the desk drawer when the girls approached them. I don't understand it."

This thing just gets stranger and stranger. I'm really not sure what to think. If they entered an open dorm room and took nothing, what's the crime? Is there more to this than meets the eye?

From this description, where's the "larceny"?

UPDATE 3: More News:

Colgate star running back Jordan Scott admitted to searching a school dorm with a teammate early Saturday morning with the intention of stealing money, according to a police report of his arrest.

According to village Police Chief James Tilbe, Scott said he and wide receiver David Morgan tried opening the doors of several rooms in the Russell House before finding one that was open. Scott said he and Morgan then entered that room with the intention of swiping cash before two female occupants woke up and scared them off.

This is bad news. This isn't a prank that went awry, this seems to be something else.

"I think it will be handled correctly. I think the university does a thorough job," Colgate football coach Dick Biddle said Wednesday. "It's in the correct hands. We'll see what happens."

Asked if he was concerned about losing the talents of Scott, who paced [FCS] rushers with 1,875 yards this season, Biddle said, "I'm confident we have a good football team here, and we'll win."

Again, it looks like coach Biddle and Colgate's administration are doing the correct things here. I just feel sorry for Scott and Morgan, who appear to have allowed a horrible lapse in judgment to endanger their football careers and possibly their college diplomas.

Jordan Scott will play unless he murdered someone. Lets see how Coach Biddle handles breaking and enetering

As an FYI to anonymous, in 2001 Colgate had a 1st team All-American defensive back named Ameer Riley who was a 2002 pre-season All American and was Sporting News, Lindy's etc. pick for pre-Season league Defensive POY.

Ameer found himself in a bit of trouble one too many times and with an incident occurring just before training camp, even though he was in school and taking classes it was BIDDLE's DECISION to keep him off the the team for the year, effectively ending his career.

That's a wrench "enetering" your theory

Burglary does not require that anything be taken. If one enters another's property for the purpose commiting a crime, that is burglary. If they were rifling through drawers and took nothing, it is still burglary, but not theft. Trespassing would be a lesser offense of merely entering private property without permission

Could have been the kind of hijinks that goes on at college campuses ...

These are just two criminal idiots who got caught.

Scott was caught up in an incident just last year where he was stalking and actually assaulted another female student who eventually left the school in fear because of the administration's and campus police' lack of action. The details of that story should break at any minute. Coach Biddle spoke in defense of him Scott then, which may be why he isn't taking any chances with his credibility now.

This kid was a timebomb that everyone protected because of his value to that team. I believe that the school is as responsible as he is for ignoring the warnings they had that he was a problem.

You clowns want to defend these idiots, be my guest. They're finally getting what they deserve. They were bold enough to tell the police that their intent was to burglarize the place, so
F'em, they should have never got down.

I have always wondered how Scott was even admitted to the school. I understand his talent level but ultimately you hope that these kids will be role models. Im not saying I believe in the perfect world syndrome, but this kid was never even nice to kids. Most students in Hamilton just steer clear of him because hes such a bad actor. Can you believe a kid with NFL talent does this to his life?

This is an incident where Scott has been tangled in an unfortunate situation. He is a great kid with great grades. Never been in trouble in his life. From what I hear, he is a contributor on the campus and is liked on the campus and in the community. This is a situation where everything has been blown out of proportion. Kids make mistakes. He is a good kid

Great kid? This clown is just a loser who was protected until he couldn't be protected anymore. Burglarizing the rooms of his fellow students as they slept inside, stalking and attacking a female student until they're forced to leave out of fear? How exactly is this a "great kid" who was misunderstood? What exactly should the public be waiting for, a homicide? This is NOT a good kid gone momentarily bad, this is a spoiled kid who got a free passes on his bad behavior for too long because of his athletic ability and value to the football program.

Burglary, assault, stalking? How are these just youthful mistakes? Keep making excuses for this punk, I'm sure he'll appreciate it during his stint in state prison.

your computer losers know nothing, jordan is a stand up guy and thats that! Get your facts stright if you want to say stuff, and know that everyone, EVERYONE makes mistakes ok even the bone heads writing these redic posts!

yal are just a bunch of haters..dont pass judgement until you know the person.. and even then who are you to judge when you have your own faults as well. Why dont you search the caliber of your team to see if everyone is a perfect citizen. meanwhile u can wait until next season when colgate waxes that a$$
Anonymous said…
Colgate won't beat Lehigh for many many years to come. Your load has been blown, hang onto it. The tide is about to change for good. i think you've had more done to your aSS than have it waxed, you do go to Colgate right? nuff said

it's kind of amusing that lehigh students are trying to judge a colgate student. just wait for all of the facts to come out; in the mean time, it's not fair to be labeling jordan as some monster. as colgate student, i can say that he had a fine reputation on campus and people don't avoid him like one user posted before. while what he did is inexcusable regardless of the circumstances, i would say it's a temporary lapse in judgment as opposed to some bogus escalation of criminal activity.

to the person who replied at 11:48... ur prolly some punk ass loser who aint never played football. or is too unathletic to even hold a football.. and u jus love the opportunity to further put down someone who has just made a mistake.. lehigh wont beat colgate for at least 3 more years.. and i cant wait to watch colgate stick a fatass boot up lehighs rectal cavity

Sexual harassment? assault? I know jordan he's a good friend who made a terrible mistake. If God can forgive I can. I know what this cowardly and ridiculous person is talking about and it was not stalking or whatever he or she is claiming. He an a girl had a falling out. Thats it. I know what went on, actually alot of ppl know what went on and the girl in question had other problems with ppl in her dorm. Whoever is claiming these things needs to get the facts straight b/c the girl did not leave b/c of jordan she left b/c she alienated herslef from everyone and no one liked her. I know... With the grades that jordan gets and the schedule he keeps, he would have no time to stalk anyone. I'm upset that someone will throw ludicrous accusations out at a time like this. I'll set the record straight. I'll drop names and screen names. Whoever made those posts were and are lying! period. Ppl can verify. So enough with this protecting him b/c of this and that. He made a mistake. God forgives, so do i, you should to...

To second the comment before mine--
I know Jordan too. He's been in my home, he hugs my mother, I go to school with him and I look forward to seeing him on campus as much as I do on the football field. I have always admired him and certainly NEVER feared him. I have spoken highly of him since the day I met him. When I heard about all of this I was shocked because the person who walked into that dorm room could not possibly be the same J.Scott I know and love. I can't pretend to understand his actions in this instance. DO NOT fabricate details from an incident you so clearly know NOTHING about and start throwing out labels like "stalker" "sexual harassment" "monster" "assault" and "criminal" --that's just not how or what he is. His friends, family, loved ones, teammates, and classmates will inevitably find a way to move past all of this- a HUGE lapse in judgment occured and a mistake was made.

Furthermore-- a lot happens on every college campus. I know personally of several instances in which items have been stolen, recovered, and those responsible have not had to face Hamilton police or national press. The reason this all escalated to begin with is because Hamilton police, instead of campus safety, was called first. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES am I condoning the actions of Scott and Morgan. HOWEVER all of this is unusual and has escalated even further than is consistant with similar (and more extreme) violations of other individuals.

Toilet-papering the cafeteria is a "lapse in judgement." Entering someone's dorm room in an attempt to steal cash is a "crime." Good thing the police were called before the Robo Cops of Campus Safetly had a chance to cover it up. Scott and his punk accomplice need to few months in jail. Scott is a menace to society.
Anonymous said…
Just an FYI: All of Colgate's Campus Safety officers are police officers. We don't have "Robo Cops" on our campus.
Anonymous said…
ok... he's a criminal, he's this he's that. So how do you explain a white feamle being caught with over $500 in cash, purses, ipods, cameras etc getting off with just discinplinary probation. That DID happen this past 07 fall semester. These are the same campus safety "police" who pushed for felony charges on Scott and Morgan, two minorities, who took nothing. Everybody doesn't want to say it's a race thing but how can't it be. Yes they're guilty for what they did but does that call for different treatment in this whole process. This is not the first time someone went into another person's room, but it is the 1st time it has been taken outside the campus and felony charges have been given. So i wonder the next time someone enters anothers room on the Colgate campus without consent, what will happen? I guess it depends on the hue of their skin...
Anonymous said…
To the idiots saying that they would drop "names" and screennames, morons obviously stick together. That would be considered harassment. You and him obviously don't understand the seriousness of being a criminal.
Anonymous said…
I believe it. Obnoxious student-athletes always run rampant on campuses unchecked. It's not surprising that he would have been involved in more incidents that got swept under the rug. By the way, no one just wakes up one day and decides to burglarize rooms... it was a planned crime. Obviously his character isn't as great as some of you are saying.

Burglary is a FELONY, just like rape, assault and arson. how many "good" people do you know that have "lapses in judgment" that big? bad pranks are "lapses in judgment", felony offenses aren't.
Anonymous said…
don't girls usually alienate themselves after becoming victims of sexual harassment?

...just a theory.

jordan is a great person! As for whoever said he that he got into colgate because of football never had a class with jordan. He is extremely intelligent and well spoken. He is kind to everyone and he doesn't have time to stalk girls...are you serious? He is a gentle, loving, caring person that made a mistake. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant for letting others influence them. He is a wonderful person and one of the best people I have ever met. He is one of those people that is kind to you even if you don't deserve it. He's no typical jock... he writes poetry, he does spoken word, he studies hard, he is very smart, he is respectful of ALL women and is kind to everyone He simply made a mistake. But who's perfect?
Anonymous said…
no one wakes up one day and decides to become a thief. "mistake" suggests this only happened one time. one would be naive to think that this was. he's a petty criminal, what's so great about that?
Anonymous said…
criminal!?! you must have never met a real criminal because anyone in their right mind who knows jordan scott would disagree with you! In case you are unaware of Colgate's racial issues I'll inform you. Lets just say this, if jordan were a white male the police would have NEVER been called. People always go around checking doors to see if any idiot left their door open, mostly people do it as a prank. So first of all students need to stop being so stupid and learn to lock their doors. Most of the kids at Colgate are rich kids from boarding schools who don't even know how to take care of themselves or their things. And trust me when I say that if jordan had been white you would have never heard about this situation. Colgate's police is extremely racist!!!! The people of Hamilton are not use to seeing people of color and they constantly point them out as criminals right away. Why is it that out of everyone in my dorm, I was the only one asked for id? Before anyone speaks on the issue they should really be aware of colgate's issues with race and diversity. There's a reason Colgate has remained primarily white so many years!
Anonymous said…
a criminal is anyone who commits a crime. whether white students before him were able to get away with the same crime doesn't make him less guilty. in fact, i now have LESS sympathy for him because if it is as racist as you say, he should have thought twice about the little stunt he pulled. he was tripping off his star football player ego and fell. no loss there.
Anonymous said…
Jordan doesn't go around acting like a big shot. It's not that he let his ego get the best of him either, he simply made a mistake. I'm SURE that eveyone, at least once in their lives, has broken the law...including you! If you define a criminal as ANYONE who brakes the law then congrats, you too are a criminal!
Anonymous said…
yes, i'm sure everyone has broken the law before. HOWEVER, statistically burglars are not caught on their first attempt. there is a difference between a mistake and a criminal lifestyle. i doubt that this was the first time. if he was really just making a "mistake" his conscious would have kicked in while he was trying all those doors. regardless of this, he did it and needs to face the consequences, period.

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League....

UMass 21, Lafayette 14, halftime

Are you watching this game? UMass had this game under control until about 3 minutes in the second quarter, and then got an interception, converted for a TD. Then the Leopards forced a fumble off the return, and then converted THAT for a TD, making this a game. It's on CN8. You really should be watching this.

Examining A Figure Skating Rivalry: Tonya and Nancy

It must be very hard for a millennial to understand the fuss around the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding figure skating scandal in the run-up to the 1994 Olympics. If you're of a certain age, though - whether you're a figure skating fan or not, and I am decidedly no fan of figure skating - the Shakespearean story of Harding and Kerrigan still engages, and still grabs peoples' attention, twenty years later. Why, though?  Why, twenty years later, in a sport I care little, does the story still grab me?  Why did I spend time out of my life watching dueling NBC and ESPN documentaries on the subject, and Google multiple stories about Jeff Gilooly , idiot "bodyguards", and the whole sordid affair? I think it's because the story, even twenty years later, is like opium. The addictive story, even now, has everything.  Everything.  The woman that fought for everything, perhaps crossing over to the dark side to get her chance at Olypic Gold, vs. the woman who...
