Lehigh Sports Happenings, Nov. 30th-Dec 6th

When you start to write about college football year round, you start to realize that football talk never truly dies, it just dies down a little until the next big event (postseason accolades, the FCS playoffs, recruiting season, Spring football, the NFL draft). But in the winter, there's other big sporting events at Lehigh in the winter - especially something else I enjoy: college basketball (men's and women's). In the long stretch of time when there's no football games on Saturdays, like last year I like to highlight the upcoming events for the winter sports I enjoy and other folks love as well. Without any further ado, here's what is coming up this weekend, and the coming week.

Men's Basketball (2-3) (Sagarin: 253)
12/1 at Central Connecticut State (1-5) (Sagarin: 245)
12/5 STONY BROOK (0-6) (Sagarin: 314)

The Mountain Hawks lost a close double-overtime game to Quinnipiac 92-88 this Wednesday at Stabler as a respectable 649 fans showed up on a weekday to see exactly who Lehigh's young guns are. The returning freshman of the year, sophomore PG Marquis Hall (27 points, 7 assists) continues to shine, while senior F Bryan White (14 points, 8 rebounds) and sophomore F Zahir Carrington (23 points) did everything they could to win. But the difference ended up being on the boards: the Bobcats out-rebounded us 53-38 on the night, which probably was the difference.

With a very young team (White is the only senior) and a budding superstar in Hall, look for improvement this week as Lehigh faces two very winnable games. If next week I'm talking about a 4-3 team, perhaps some eyebrows around the league may start raising about these Mountain Hawks.

Women's Basketball (1-3) (Sagarin: 216)
11/30 at North Florida (Sagarin: 279)
12/2 at Jacksonville (Sagarin: 143)
12/5 LIU (Sagarin: 157)

You might think that the lady Hawks might be struggling with a 1-3 record: until you see exactly who head coach Sue Troyan has been up against in St Joe's (Sag: 82), Princeton (Sag:226), and Syracuse (Sag: 124). Still, the Lady Hawks have had problems scoring as freshman G Erica Prosser is the leading scorer with 9.8 PPG (and is a perfect 13-for-13 from the foul line), with junior F/C Melissa Rich not far behind with 8.8 PPG (and 22 rebounds). Lehigh is still waiting for sophomore F Wendy Szerbiak to appear in a game, who unfortunately seems to have inherited her famous NBA brother Wally's propensity for injuries.

Unfortunately, the "early season from hell" continues with one very winnable game (tonight at North Florida) and two awfully tough games versus Jacksonville and LIU. On the bright side, the weather calls for 70 degree sunny days for the Lady Hawks. Might be a good time to get some sun before heading back to frigid Bethlehem.

Wrestling (2-4)
11/30 RUTGERS (Grace Hall)
12/2 at Maryland, at American

The game notes point out that Rutgers is "rebuilding", but Lehigh's struggling wrestling team is hoping they've righted the ship after an embarassing 39-0 shutout versus Central Michigan, with two duals victories versus Binghamton (35-10) and Clarion (21-15). Only four seniors dot the roster, while it's hard to pinpoint exactly who the leader is on this team. Junior captain Matt Fisk hasn't wrestled all year, while freshman Alex Caruso (174 lbs) may the closest thing to a consistent winner the grapplers have seen, winning three of his last four bouts including one fall.

The grapplers will have their hands full this week. I'd consider a win against Rutgers and American an extremely successful week, with a loss to nationally-ranked Maryland on the road a probability. But don't be surprised to see an 1-2 or a dreaded 0-3 week here.

A very nice win over Rutgers. Most were predicting a 5-5 split with bonus points being the difference. Lehigh won 7 and should have won 8 with Berger getting pinned having a 5 point cushion. He has nice moves, but appears not to have enough strength when battling a 'horse'. Only a freshman, though, with a lot of potential. Galante showed he's a very dangerous man that could win any match. He pinned Nebraska's #9 ranked wrestler earlier this year. Everyone knew there'd be growing pains this year, but the guys are scrapping and by March, who knows?

You're clueless when it comes to football and even worse when it comes to wrestling. You know NOTHING, so why even write about it? All you'll do is mislead. For example: Fisk is redshirting; chances of losing to American are zero; chances of losing to Rutgers were slim; Binghamton and Clarion are horrible.

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. Made-Up Midseason Grades for Lehigh Football

We are now officially midway through the 2023 Lehigh football season.  The Mountain Hawks sit at 1-5 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League. I thought I'd go ahead and make up some midseason grades, and set some "fan goals" for the second half. The 2023 Mountain Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the seven team Patriot League.  In order to meet or exceed that expectation, they'll probably have to go at least 3-2 the rest of the way in conference play.  Their remaining games are vs. Georgetown, at Bucknell, vs. Holy Cross, at Colgate, and vs. Lafayette in The Rivalry. Can they do it? Culture Changing: B+ .  I was there in the Bronx last week after the tough 38-35 defeat to Fordham, and there wasn't a single player emerging from the locker room that looked like they didn't care.  Every face was glum.  They didn't even seem sad.  More frustrated and angry. That may seem normal, considering the agonizing way the Mountain Hawks lost, but it was a marked chan

Fifteen Guys Who Might be Lehigh's Next Football Coach (and Five More)

If you've been following my Twitter account, you might have caught some "possibilities" as Lehigh's next head football coach like Lou Holtz, Brett Favre and Bo Pelini .  The chance that any of those three guys actually are offered and accept the Lehigh head coaching position are somewhere between zero and zero.  (The full list of my Twitter "possibilities" are all on this thread on the Lehigh Sports Forum .) However the actual Lehigh head football coaching search is well underway, with real names and real possibilities. I've come up with a list of fifteen possible names, some which I've heard whispered as candidates, others which might be good fits at Lehigh for a variety of reasons. UPDATE: I have found five more names of possible head coaches that I am adding to this list below. Who are the twenty people?  Here they are, in alphabetical order.
