...And I Don't Think It Involves Drinking

Lost in all the fanfare about recruiting, Lehigh landed three players on the all-fraternity all-American team last week. It's admittedly the first I'd heard of this all-American team, but it's a great honor for senior C John Reese (Chi Psi), senior OL Jimmy Kehs (DU) and junior DL Brian Jackson (Chi Psi) to be included on the same team as players from FBS schools such as Colorado, Miami (Fl), Oklahoma State and others. Congratulations to all three!

Also potentially lost in the fanfare about recruiting is another nugget of information: that senior WR Pete Donchez was saluted at the Lehigh Valley chapter of the National Football foundation this past weekend. Of interest to all those bleeding Brown & White will be the following:

Donchez, who was recently honored by the Patriot League for a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester, had an option to return for a fifth year at Lehigh. Instead, he has accepted a job offer in the global finance division of IBM.

''I'm at the point in my life where I'm ready to take the next step,'' Donchez said.

I can't say I totally blame him - after all, right out of Lehigh I also worked for the global finance division of IBM, of all places - but as a football fan I was secretly hoping he would be returning for a 5th year to give him another chance to play after several injury-riddled seasons. Still, with a job like that, he can rightfully say that his time at Lehigh will have been a true success - and in reality that's what a Lehigh education is all about in the end.

Finally, concluding the NFF meeting was the honoring of high school senior Joshua Hontz, who received a $2,000 scholarship. He's going to East Stroudsburg:

Blending an impeccable academic resumé with a stellar career on the football field, Hontz was honored Sunday night as the winner of the Albert M. Beneck Memorial Scholarship.

He was a Class 2A second-team all-state selection in 2007 after catching 60 passes for 1,006 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.

...

As impressive as those numbers were, Hontz has been just as impressive in the classroom where he is ranked eighth in a class of 160 and has a GPA of over 100 percent. He's a member of the National Honor Society and his school's student government association.

''He's a great young man and tonight is a culmination of what Josh has accomplished over four years and what our football program has accomplished,'' said Olympians coach Mark Rosenberger. ''Having people like Josh in the program makes it very easy for me to coach.

''He's a hard worker on and off the field and a role model for our football team and everyone in the entire Jim Thorpe School District.''

Rosenberger expects more big things from the 6-2, 205-pound Hontz at ESU.

''He's a great catch for Coach [Denny] Douds at East Stroudsburg,'' Rosenberger said. ''But as great a football player he is, he's an even better person. He did whatever was asked of him and more.''

Sounds like a terrific kid, right, a perfect fit for Lehigh? Yet he's going to Division II East Stroudsburg. Honestly, I take a look at this kid's impeccable academic credentials, his stats, his height (6'2, 205 lbs), his great work ethic, and see "Lehigh material". But he's not going to be playing Division I football.

Why? There are only two possible reasons: that he really doesn't have D-I talent, that he chose a full ride at ESU after Patriot League school wouldn't pay enough of his aid, or some combination of the two.

If we had athletic scholarships, would Hontz be enrolling at Lehigh?

Face it - ESU is more serious about football than Lehigh. Check out their ever-expanding facilities and their post season record. They are nowhere near Lehigh academically but their athletic department is continually improving instead of resting on their laurels.

If Lehigh had given the kid a serious look I know he would have gone there... They told him he wasn't what they were looking for!!! Go figure...

Hes not good enough to play at LU

Thats what is great about this country anyone can have an opinion on any topic even if they don't have all the facts on the kid. He will do fine no matter where he plays ball because he realizes that football is not what life is about. I know him personally and he is a great kid so best of luck to Josh Hontz @ ESU!!!
Go Warriors!!

How The Ivy League Is Able To Break the NCAA's Scholarship Limits and Still Consider Themselves FCS

By now you've seen the results.  In 2018, the Ivy League has taken the FCS by storm. Perhaps it was Penn's 30-10 defeat of Lehigh a couple of weeks ago .  Or maybe it was Princeton's 50-9 drubbing of another team that made the FCS Playoffs last year, Monmouth.  Or maybe it was Yale's shockingly dominant 35-14 win over nationally-ranked Maine last weekend. The Ivy League has gone an astounding 12-4 so far in out-of-conference play, many of those wins coming against the Patriot League. But it's not just against the Patriot League where the Ivy League has excelled.  Every Ivy League school has at least one out-of-conference victory, which is remarkable since it is only three games into their football season.  The four losses - Rhode Island over Harvard, Holy Cross over Yale, Delaware over Cornell, and Cal Poly over Brown - were either close losses that could have gone either way or expected blowouts of teams picked to be at the bottom of the Ivy League. Made-Up Midseason Grades for Lehigh Football

We are now officially midway through the 2023 Lehigh football season.  The Mountain Hawks sit at 1-5 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League. I thought I'd go ahead and make up some midseason grades, and set some "fan goals" for the second half. The 2023 Mountain Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the seven team Patriot League.  In order to meet or exceed that expectation, they'll probably have to go at least 3-2 the rest of the way in conference play.  Their remaining games are vs. Georgetown, at Bucknell, vs. Holy Cross, at Colgate, and vs. Lafayette in The Rivalry. Can they do it? Culture Changing: B+ .  I was there in the Bronx last week after the tough 38-35 defeat to Fordham, and there wasn't a single player emerging from the locker room that looked like they didn't care.  Every face was glum.  They didn't even seem sad.  More frustrated and angry. That may seem normal, considering the agonizing way the Mountain Hawks lost, but it was a marked chan

Fifteen Guys Who Might be Lehigh's Next Football Coach (and Five More)

If you've been following my Twitter account, you might have caught some "possibilities" as Lehigh's next head football coach like Lou Holtz, Brett Favre and Bo Pelini .  The chance that any of those three guys actually are offered and accept the Lehigh head coaching position are somewhere between zero and zero.  (The full list of my Twitter "possibilities" are all on this thread on the Lehigh Sports Forum .) However the actual Lehigh head football coaching search is well underway, with real names and real possibilities. I've come up with a list of fifteen possible names, some which I've heard whispered as candidates, others which might be good fits at Lehigh for a variety of reasons. UPDATE: I have found five more names of possible head coaches that I am adding to this list below. Who are the twenty people?  Here they are, in alphabetical order.
